Nashville: From Music City to Brew Mecca

Nashville: From Music City to Brew Mecca

Like many cities across the country, Nashville is no stranger to the craft beer boom. The city now claims close to 20 breweries (with another eight or so just outside the city limits), and it doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

From IPAs to blonds to porters, the array of beers available across Music City continues to grow in popularity. You can go from the Gulch to Germantown to East Nashville and check out different beers and see brewmasters experimenting with a variety of styles and flavors.

Many local restaurants team up with breweries to collaborate on beers and even use them in various foodstuffs. In addition to having one of the largest craft beer menus in Nashville, M.L. Rose works with local breweries for tap takeovers and exclusive releases. Even more, it works with Jackalope Brewing Co. on an annual collaboration project that is only served at the tavern's three Nashville locations and at the brewery. At Von Elrod's Beer Garden and Sausage House, guests may enjoy spreading one of its house-made signature mustards made with Jackalope's Bearwalker Maple Brown Ale on sausages and pretzels. And TailGate, another local brewery, uses cold brew coffee from local roaster 8th & Roast to use in its seasonal coffee milk beer.

So if you love beer and you find yourself in Nashville, know you can find local brews all over the city at bars and restaurants. Or you can visit the source yourself. Here are four Nashville breweries to check out—and by no means are these the only ones.

Black Abbey Brewing Co.

Set inside an industrial building in South Nashville, this brewery takes inspiration from Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation (its taproom is called Fellowship Hall and provides full views of the brewing process), while focusing on Belgian-inspired beers. Swing by for the Rose, a Belgian Blonde; the Forty-Four Porter or the Five Points, an aromatic American IPA. Depending on when you visit, you may luck out with a limited edition dark-brown, farmhouse-style Abbey Saison.

Located in the Gulch, Jackalope opened in 2011 (started by two women; one has since left) and quickly became one of the most popular in town. It also was the first local craft brewer to can its beer. Yearround, seek out its slightly tropical Thunder Ann pale ale or the Rompo Red Eye Ale that offers fruity, caramel notes. Seasonally, the brewery has fun experimenting with beers like the Lovebird, a tart strawberry/raspberry hefeweizen and the Snowman, a mocha stout perfect for winter months.

Southern Grist

A favorite of Bastion chef/owner Josh Habiger, the brewery opened in East Nashville in 2016 with two ideas in mind: innovation and experimentation. The partners love to play around with ingredients, which is why if you visit either taproom in East Nashville or The Nations, you'll often find interesting beers like the Barista Berry Hill (a sour with mango, blueberry and coffee from local roaster Barista Parlor), Sugar Baby (a sweet and tart beer made with Sugar Baby watermelons and black Hawaiian lava salt) and the Moves Like Jaggery (an imperial stout made with coconut, cashews and cardamom).

Yazoo Brewing Co.

Founded in 2003 by Mississippi native Linus Hall, Yazoo moved to the Gulch in 2010. The award-winning brewery has helped put Nashville beers on the map. Visit the 18-handle taproom or sit out on the patio while enjoying beers off the daily-updated menu. Check out the Fruited Gose, the Blood Orange Berliner, Across the Plateau dark ale done in collaboration with the acclaimed Blackberry Farms or the Dos Perros brown ale.
