Master of the Business of Food
A James Beard finalist and proprietor of five restaurants in New York and Philadelphia, Ellen Yin joins the #restaurantinc podcast to discuss the secrets to her success—and how she thrives in such a volatile industry.
“One of the keys to the secret to our success is that we’re always looking to evolve,” reveals Ellen Yin, founder and co-owner of High Street Hospitality Group (HSHG), during the latest #restaurantinc podcast. As a “lifer” in the hospitality industry (she caught the hospitality bug when she first worked in a restaurant at age 16), Yin is always looking to improve her businesses while also improving the quality of life for her employees.
Her New York and Philadelphia operations include a bakery, new American bistro and French-inspired eatery, which are so highly regarded that she was named a finalist for Outstanding Restaurateur, James Beard Foundation, in 2017. But it’s not just about the accolades, for Yin, who recognizes that without her employees her restaurant group might not be the standout leader it is today.
“Our team needed to be treated with respect,” she continues during the podcast. “From the beginning, it was always a goal of mine to make sure our staff was competitively paid, and also that they received benefits.”
An ambassador for Unilevel Food Solution’s #FairKitchens movement—which helps restaurateurs and chefs build a better kitchen culture—Yin offers her employees full health benefits, a 401K plan, cafeteria plan and more. Join us for the conversation.
